CHAPTER SIX

They walked hand in hand as I followed behind them. An afterthought to their new relationship. It was strange for reasons I hadn’t expected. A part of me had anticipated more of a reaction. The feeling of being left out, or worried, or scared. But the reality was far calmer. I felt happy, almost joyful watching them both. Knowing that this woman I loved so dearly was going to do what she wanted. Going to get what she wanted.

“Ethan?” I heard a voice call me from behind.

I turned to see who it was. Brody Williams, tall and bulky, came storming down the hall, robe open in a pair of shorts. He pulled me in and hugged me. “Damn man, where the fuck have you been?” he yelled, drawing the attention of the guests. “This fucking guy.” He looked at my wife, then Sean, then me again. He grabbed my arms, shaking me as he spoke. “This fucking guy.” He walked to Sean, dapped him up, and hugged Aria. I don’t even think he knew who she was.

“Doesn’t call, doesn’t visit. Then Violet tells me she saw you with a new piece of ass.” He did know who she was. “And I’m over here thinking… well at the least he’s gonna come say hello.”

“Hello, Brody,” I said, sarcastically.

“Shiiit, that’s more like it.” He turned to Aria. He raised her hand to his lips and kissed her. “Brody,” he said. “Brody the magnificent.”

Aria smirked. “Why do they call you that?”

He chuckled and released her hand, his smile turning into a devilish grin. “Because it always manages to fit.” He curled over at his joke. A big beast of a man with the personality of a hyena.

It was a common trait in our group now that I thought about it. Our humor was making people uncomfortable, that was always our thing. Even if it led us to say the most stupid shit. I’d partially lost that as time went on, worried it’d scare off Aria.

“How you been though man, what’d you do now anyways?” Brody said.

“Accounting.” I didn’t want this conversation to go on longer, not now at least.

He nodded. “Good shit. Good shit.” He patted himself on the chest. “Investment Banking.”

That news shocked me. Brody had always been the artistic type strangely enough. A big friendly giant who knew how to paint and sing. It’s what gave him the ego he has today.

“You know Franky and Maya are here too? A bunch of us are out by the pool, you should come, catch up with the gang.”

“Yeah well right now I’m a little-” I caught a glimpse of Aria. She and Sean uninterested in the conversation, talking and laughing as she held his gaze. Maybe it was best to let it be. Give them their space. “Ya’know what… sure,” I said.

I walked over to Aria and hugged her. I squeezed her as though I was going off to war. I kissed her cheeks and worked up to her forehead, smothering her in as much love as I could.
